› London Shows
Welcome to the West End, home of great shows such as We Will Rock You, Jersey Boys, Thriller – Live, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Grease, Blood Brothers and many more. It is in this location, known affectionately as ‘theatreland’, that you will find great quality entertainment from world class performers, writers and directors. If it is great theatre that you are in need of, then look no further than the West End!
In recent years, world famous shows have been seen in London and the around the globe as successful productions either transfer to the West End or they embark on world tours based on their success there. You could call it a breeding ground for talent, a place where young actors and directors hope to one day showcase their work for adoring crowds. It is a place that stands as the pinnacle of their dreams and ensures that witnessing work in the West End involves witnessing work at the best of quality.
This could be why West End shows have spawned such hit movies like Mamma Mia!, which is still running at the Prince of Wales Theatre and why there is talk of Billy Elliot – The Musical being adapted for the silver screen. Success in London could mean success around the world.
Mamma Mia! of course broke box office records in the United Kingdom when the movie version opened in 2008. The story of Sophie trying to find her father in the run up to her wedding has opened people’s hearts and brought more people to the West End than ever; all of them equipped with the theatre tickets for great musicals. It means that the songs they enjoyed in the cinema (as well as those they had already heard from ABBA records) could be heard in the auditoriums of the theatre. Songs such as “Super Trooper”, “Thank You For The Music”, “Waterloo”, “Chiquita” and even “Mamma Mia” itself have been delighting audiences and leaving them wanting more.
In the West End, theatres have been enormously popular for centuries. Not only is this found in the traditions and expectations of those when they arrive, it is also found in the elegant Romanesque designs of the auditoriums and theatres’ facades, with many of these beautiful buildings dating back to the early nineteenth century (some even earlier). Even the newest of theatres are housed on sites that are enriched with theatrical history.
So theatre tickets allow you to witness musicals, plays, ballet and opera, but along the way you can take a look back at history.
